The Vice President of the Republic, H.E. Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, held a working meeting with the Ministry of Information, Press, Culture and Tourism to discuss the administrative status of betting businesses, the preservation of cultural heritage and the measures needed to promote national tourism.

During the meeting, the Vice President enquired about the legal status of betting businesses operating in Equatorial Guinea. According to the information presented, some establishments are reportedly operating without licences, while in other cases there are questions about the procedures followed to obtain authorisation. This situation highlights the need to clarify the conditions under which these businesses operate and make progress towards regularising their status.

The meeting also addressed the discovery on the island of Corisco of objects of significant cultural and archaeological value associated with the kings of the Benga Kingdom. In light of reports suggesting that some of these pieces may have been sold in European countries, H.E. Nguema Obiang Mangue stressed the need to locate the remaining objects and place them in a secure location that ensures their preservation and allows visits to be organised as part of the country’s cultural and tourism offering.

On tourism, the Vice President recommended that the minister develop a comprehensive plan to improve the sector’s profitability and make use of the country’s potential. Initial measures include re-establishing contacts with tour operators, following up on agreements with China and approaching the relevant Russian bodies to explore their interest in Equatorial Guinea as a tourism destination, as well as contacting cruise operators.

The proposal should also provide for the production of tourist guides for distribution through airlines, embassies, ministries and public establishments. He also emphasised the importance of a website presenting tourist routes and useful information about the country.

At the close of the meeting, the Vice President awaited the ministry’s working sessions and the submission of a concrete proposal for approval and implementation, with the aim of advancing a sector with considerable potential for the national economy.
