The President of the Republic, H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, attended the 8th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Summit in Moscow on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. The meeting was chaired by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
Held at Moscow’s World Trade Centre, the summit brought together leaders and representatives of gas-producing and exporting countries, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
During the plenary session, Putin called for stronger international cooperation to support stability in the global natural gas market. He highlighted the strategic importance of this resource, stating that it accounts for around a quarter of global energy consumption. According to the projections he presented, demand could reach 5.5 trillion cubic metres annually by the middle of the century.
The Russian President warned of risks linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, disruptions to supply routes, and trade and technology restrictions. He advocated relations among exporting countries based on trust, mutual benefit and respect for national interests.
He also stated that GECF member countries hold approximately 70% of global natural gas reserves and account for around 40% of exports. He highlighted Russia’s role as a producer and outlined his position on the economic consequences of restrictions on its market participation.
Equatorial Guinea’s participation, as a GECF member, reflects its interest in strengthening cooperation with other producers, sharing experience and contributing to discussions on energy security, stable supplies and the development of the gas industry.
The meeting precedes the 3rd Russia–Africa Summit, scheduled for 28 and 29 October, where President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo will continue his diplomatic programme.
