Vice-President calls for measures to improve electricity supply and protect street lighting

Reunión del Vicepresidente con representantes del Ministerio de Hidrocarburos, Minas y Electricidad y SEGESA.

H. E. Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, Vice-President of the Republic, met with the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, Mines and Electricity and representatives of SEGESA to examine difficulties affecting the energy sector and the implementation of Government projects.

The meeting addressed maintenance expenditure at hydroelectric plants, payments to suppliers, materials procurement and street lighting. Financial obligations relating to electricity generation and distribution were also reviewed to improve the management of available resources.

The Vice-President stressed the need to maintain sufficient stocks of transformers, cables and other essential components to prevent breakdowns and respond quickly to faults on the electricity network.

Regarding street lighting in Malabo, technicians reported repeated thefts of copper cables on the Sipopo–airport expressway. They explained that thefts recur after repairs and disrupt service continuity despite arrests.

The Vice-President requested that the Ministry and SEGESA present concrete proposals the following week to address the issues raised and move swiftly towards resolving them.

To protect street lighting, he highlighted the need to modernise installations using technical solutions and materials that make theft more difficult and reduce their appeal for resale as scrap.

These measures seek to improve the continuity of electricity supply, strengthen infrastructure maintenance and protect public assets.
